The fight against MND

I am fundraising for FightMND!

Last year, my mum was diagnosed with MND. It came as a huge shock to my family, but it has also reminded us how important it is not to put off the things we want to do “until another day.” 

Thankfully, Mum’s condition is progressing slowly. Her symptoms first started over 18 months ago and are currently limited to her left forearm and hand, and we remain very hopeful that the slow progression continues🤞🏼 Throughout everything, she has been incredibly strong and pragmatic, focusing on living life to the fullest and enjoying time with family and friends. She’s also chosen to speak openly about her situation in the hope it may help others facing similar challenges.

MND is a devastating neurological disease that affects the nerves responsible for sending messages from the brain to the muscles. Over time, people living with MND can lose the ability to walk, use their arms and hands, speak, swallow and eventually breathe independently all while their mind and awareness often remain fully intact.

It truly is a horrible disease and currently there is no cure. Watching someone you love gradually lose the ability to do everyday things most of us take for granted is incredibly difficult, which is why I believe raising awareness and funding research is so important.

On 6 June, me, my brother and stepdad will be taking on Tough Mudder Edinburgh. We’ve decided to share Mum’s story publicly and raise money to support the FightMND. I’ve also got my eye on taking part in a few more events later in the year to continue raising awareness and support for the MND community.

Any support, no matter how small, would mean a huge amount to us and the wider MND community.
