What is the Big Freeze?

add remove

The Big Freeze is FightMND’s largest fundraising campaign, raising vital funds for MND research and projects supporting those living with MND

On 9 June 2025, the MCG will be flooded with blue Beanies as brave celebrities take the plunge into Australia’s coldest ice bath. And we’re not stopping there! We’re freezing the nation with State Freeze events in WA, SA, and Qld!

Why should I volunteer at the Big Freeze?

add remove

Our volunteers are the heart and soul of FightMND. We couldn’t do what we do without them!

We are always on the lookout for new volunteers for the Big Freeze.

Volunteering at a Big Freeze is not only rewarding, it’s a lot of fun! If you’re ready to be a part of something meaningful and fun, we’d love to welcome you on board.

What does volunteering at a Big Freeze activation involve?

add remove

Volunteering at a Big Freeze activation is an awesome way to make a real impact while having a blast! As a volunteer, you may be asked to:

  • Shake it up by collecting cash donations with our bold and bright yellow tins
  • sell our iconic Big Freeze Beanies
  • hold one of our big ‘Beanie Sale’ sings and grab the crowd’s attention.

Before the big day, we'll let you know exactly what role you'll be taking on, so no surprises! And, to make sure everything runs smoothly, you'll be part of a fun team, each playing a key part in making the day a success.

Can I volunteer with a group?

add remove

Of course! We know that lots of our volunteers like to come with friends or family and enjoy the day together.

When signing up you will be able to invite those you want to volunteer with to sign up or they can sign up themselves, just make sure to let us know who your group is!

Can I volunteer by myself?

add remove

Signing up to volunteer by yourself is absolutely fine!

All volunteers will be pre-allocated into a group for the day to ensure that all of the roles are covered.

Some of our best stories come from volunteers meeting on the day and sharing their care and passion for why they want to volunteer with us!

Do I get a ticket to the AFL game I’m volunteering at?

add remove

Thanks to the generosity of the ALF clubs involved with our Big Freeze activations, we’re very grateful to have a small number of General Admission (GA) tickets for each game.

These tickets are VERY limited and are available on a first come, first served system.

But don’t worry – just because tickets are gone, doesn’t mean volunteer spots are! There are still plenty of chances to get involved and make a difference.

Are there a limited number of volunteer spots available?

add remove

Volunteer spots are limited, so make sure you sign up quickly before they’re all gone!

If we hit full capacity, don’t worry—waitlists will open, and if any spots become available, we’ll reach out to you right away. Keep an eye on your inbox for updates from us!

What happens if I miss out on a spot?

add remove

Waitlists become available for each activation as soon as we reach capacity and volunteer spots are exhausted.

If spots become available, we will be reaching out to the waitlist with the opportunity to sign up on a first come first serve basis.

Keep an eye out for further emails from us regarding this.

I've missed out on a volunteering place for Big Freeze 11 and I'm disappointed as I really wanted to help. Is there any way I can be involved?

Thank you so much for expressing your interest in volunteering with FightMND for Big Freeze 11! We’re thrilled to have such a supportive community who want to contribute to this important cause and we’re glad you’re part of it.
Due to a limited number of volunteering spots, we’ve had to allocate places on a first-come, first-served basis. We've added you to the waitlist for your local Big Freeze event. If any spots become available, we'll be in touch with more information.
We really appreciate your continued support and passion for the cause. We’ll keep you posted on any new opportunities to get involved, and we hope to have the chance to work with you soon!

What should I bring with me on activation day?

add remove

Volunteering at an activation is a fun and busy 6-hour adventure, so it’s important to come prepared to stay comfy and energized! Here's what you'll need to bring:

Comfortable clothes

Be sure to wear comfy shoes, pants, and something warm—you’ll be on your feet a lot!

A Big Freeze t-shirt will be provided on the day, so you’ll look the part!

Food

Pack your own snacks and meals to keep your energy up throughout the day—your stomach will thank you!

Water bottles

Hydration is key, especially when you’re on your feet for long stretches. Make sure you’ve got a water bottle to sip on during your shift!

A positive attitude

We want you to bring your best vibe! Positivity, energy, and excitement will make the day unforgettable for both you and everyone you help.

Come ready for a day full of fun and making a difference!
