You may well ask, 'WHY 'Team Microbiology?' ........and fair enough, too. Microbiology is what I've been privileged to do for my working life.
Whilst we don't yet know the definitive causes that lead to MND (or why in some individuals and not others), the possibility of an underlying microbial agent remains as one of the hypotheses.
To this end, one of the research teams based in Adelaide (and being supported in their work by FightMND) is investigating the link between human retroviruses - the same family of viruses as HIV - and motor neurone disease. It's a microbiological link that warrants investigation; and, if shown to be so, is a significant path to enabling future treatments AND prevention.
To this end, I'm really excited about where this research might lead.
